A traditional Tummy Tuck or abdominoplasty is an operation to tighten and reshape the abdominal area. Most other surgeons tend to simply focus on the removal of excess skin to create a “flatter” appearance. Whilst our specialist surgeons will remove any excess skin and fat, they also tighten and (if muscle separation has occurred during pregnancy) repair the underlying muscles to create a more sculpted, smoother, and more toned tummy.
During a Tummy Tuck, extra skin is excised, so that any stretch marks or scars in the area are cut away. “Contoured” Tummy Tuck surgery can effectively regain your abdominal tone and shape, and significantly improve your self-esteem.
Hyperpigmentation, which leads to more prominent scars, is a common risk for people with melanated skin tones, whether resulting from accidental injuries or surgical incisions. Furthermore, individuals with darker skin may have a higher susceptibility to keloid scarring and an increased risk of complications. However, this does not mean that surgery is off-limits for darker skin individuals; it simply highlights the need for increased care and awareness. There are always ways to minimise the risk of noticeable scars without compromising the surgery.

Scarring is a natural part of any surgical procedure, including tummy tuck surgery. However, skilled plastic surgeons, such as those at Bella Vou, are experienced in minimising scarring by making small and discreet incisions and utilising precise suturing techniques.
It's important to note that individuals with darker skin tones have a higher susceptibility to keloid and hypertrophic scarring. Keloid scars are characterised by excessive scar tissue growth that can be larger than the original wound, forming raised, reddish nodules. Hypertrophic scars have a similar appearance but are generally smaller and may fade over time. These scars are typically limited to the injury site and commonly occur on areas like the knees, shoulders, abdomen, breasts, and breastbone.
Fortunately, both keloid and hypertrophic scars can be effectively treated. Monthly injections of long-lasting cortisone into keloids can reduce their visibility and flatten them within 3 to 6 months. Hypertrophic scars also tend to respond well to this treatment. A Tummy Tuck is fairly major surgery. It's important to keep your heart rate and blood pressure down for three-weeks post-op, not to stretch the incision site, and not to lift anything that would cause stress on the incision.
It’s important to wait at least three weeks before having sex, this is to allow swelling to settle and reduce the risk of developing a haematoma or seroma post-operatively. Wounds generally are healed by two weeks but the overall strength of a wound does not reach its maximum until four to six weeks. After this time it will be less of a risk and probably more comfortable for you.
We also advise that you consider your position during intercourse so that it will be less traumatic on the wounds. Avoid the missionary position. With the female on top is probably the least uncomfortable with respect to the wounds, whether the male or female has had the Tummy Tuck.

Step 2. Meet your surgeon
You will be offered a further appointment with your consultant before proceeding to surgery. This will give you a chance to find out more about the Tummy Tuck, your preparation, and recovery.
Step 3. Preparation for Tummy Tuck surgery
The staff at Bella Vou will advise you on any pre-operative preparations to reduce your risk of infection and help your recovery.
You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory medication, which can increase the risk of bleeding. It’s important to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes, which can impede the healing process. You should continue to shower daily, as usual. You will be advised about the time to start fasting in preparation for your general anaesthetic.
On the day of your surgery, you’ll be welcomed to Bella Vou, given a gown to wear and escorted to the state-of-the-art operating theatre.
Step 4. What happens during Tummy Tuck surgery?
Tummy Tuck surgery is performed under general anaesthetic. The surgeon cleans the skin then makes incisions from hip to hip and around the belly button. The surgeon will place the scars carefully so that they are hidden in the skin's natural folds and creases.
Your consultant will separate the skin from the tissues below, then realign the abdominal muscles. They’ll cut away all the excess fat and skin, create a new hole for the belly button and then stitch this in place.
Finally, the surgeon will pull the skin so that it is smooth and tight, then stitch the wound closed using sutures that are absorbable and do not need to be removed.
Step 5. Recovery from a Tummy Tuck
You will stay on the ward overnight following Tummy Tuck surgery. The following day you will be able to go home. It’s important to arrange for a friend or family member to pick you up and escort you. You will be given pain-relief and a supportive pressure garment to reduce pain, bleeding, and swelling.
It takes around six weeks to recover fully; however, after two weeks, you may feel ready to return to work. From four to six weeks, you can reintroduce exercise, gradually increasing activity as you regain fitness, strength, and confidence.
You'll wear the pressure garments day and night during your recovery. These support the scar, reduce swelling and bruising, and help you stay comfortable.
The staff at Bella Vou will carefully monitor your recovery. After a week, the wound care specialist and nurse will check your scar. At around six weeks, your surgeon will check your progress, and at six months, the nurse and wound care specialist will see you again to ensure that you remain healthy, well, and happy with your results. However, if you have any questions or concerns, the staff at Bella Vou are always on hand to offer support, day and night.

I recently underwent an abdominoplasty and hernia repair with Mr Dr Amir Nakhdjevani. Whilst I didn’t have excessive amounts of loose skin, I had post-pregnancy wrinkling above my belly button, stretch marks, and diastasis (abdominal separation), which meant my abs never really reflected the effort I put in at the gym. I first chose Bella Vou after seeing Dr Amir featured on ITV’s Olivia Attwood: The Price of Perfection and was immediately struck by his warm yet professional manner. Alongside this, Bella Vou’s complimentary consultation service and complete lack of pressure really appealed to me. It genuinely felt as though they put the client first, which isn’t always a given. The clinic itself feels more like a five-star hotel than a medical facility — elegant, spotless, calm and welcoming. Every member of staff strikes the perfect balance between friendly and professional. Dr Amir is clearly exceptional at what he does; he communicates with expertise and honesty, manages expectations clearly, and makes you feel completely safe and confident in his hands. The surgery itself lasted around 2.5 hours. Recovery-wise, I think it’s important to be honest for anyone considering this surgery: the first week is tough. However, the clinic were incredibly reassuring throughout and always available to answer questions, which helped enormously. The second week was significantly better. I was still walking slightly hunched over but was moving around the house much more confidently. Sleep improved and I became more comfortable wearing the compression garment. By the end of week two, I felt physically and mentally much brighter. I’m now at the beginning of week three and the difference compared to two weeks ago is incredible. My posture is almost completely back to normal, and whilst I still need to rest in the afternoons, I look and feel like myself again. One thing I would strongly recommend is taking a full two weeks off work if at all possible. I had optimistically scheduled a couple of work calls during week two and ended up needing to cancel them because my concentration still wasn’t fully there. In hindsight, I should have completely blocked out those two weeks from the start. Overall, I genuinely couldn’t have asked for a better experience and feel very grateful to the entire Bella Vou team.

Im not going to lie, surgery is a big deal and you have to be an a certain place to get to this point. My case was complex, with a 360 circumferential tummy tuck, muscle repair and hernia repair needed, as well as 4 sites of liposuction, following 40kg/7 stone weight loss. On the assessment I was given a clear treatment plan and fees were transparent from the first meeting with my patient coordinator Stacie… On surgery day the full team were absolutely incredible. I was reassured by my recovery nurse Kelly on what would happen. The anaesthetist also came to meet me to provide details of the surgery plan. Rado then spent extra time on the marking up process to ensure he had a very comprehensive plan during surgery itself. In November 2023 I booked a full abdominoplasty and vaser lipo with Amir. I visited for my initial consult and knew straight away that i had found the right surgeon, Amir was compassionate, knowledgeable and extremely professional. Fast forward to the 18th of January and my surgery day, Amir was understanding of how nerve wracking surgery can be and i felt at ease from the moment I walked into the building. I was in theatre a lot longer than planned due to an umbilical hernia and extra muscle repair, Amir is a perfectionist and made sure all was well and to his high standards before finishing the surgery. I’ve had a minor umbilical complication which is unfortunately one of the risks associated with this procedure. But the aftercare I have received from Amir and his team has been second to none and I could not be happier with my results. I look forward to my umbilical correction in a few months. I gained 5 stones in both of my pregnancies and breast fed for a year with each baby, and despite lots of hard work in the gym, there was no chance that my body would ever recover. At the age of 40, I have good muscle tone and low body fat (bmi of 20), but all of that was hidden under loose and saggy skin. I also had quite a large separation of my abdominal muscles, which meant my stomach protruded, despite being slim… I booked in for a circumferential tummy tuck, breast lift and implants and had my surgery at the end of November. It was a long operation (around 8 hours) and I stayed overnight at the clinic. There were really, *really* lovely nurses caring for me overnight… I’m 4 months ish post surgery and… my body looks AWESOME. Amir should work for Mattel, because he’s given me a body like Barbie. I’ve never had a body this good – even as an 18 year old my boobs weren’t this symmetrical and perky or my stomach this flat. My only regret is that I didn’t do this sooner. The first time I met Rado I was a shell of my true self. Weighed down by my previous surgery after a cervical cancer diagnosis. I didn’t love myself or my body. Rado declined to operate on me at our first consultation. When I set foot in this clinic for the first time I was impressed by the professionalism, friendliness and genuine sense of the “patient being top priority”. In my initial appointment, Amir patiently answered all my questions relating to abdominoplasty… I felt very safe and reassured that the patient’s Interests were put first at all times and above any other considerations. The day of the surgery arrived, and I was looked after by a very friendly, kind and attentive team who were there whenever I needed anything. From stepping foot at Bella Vou I knew this was the right place for me Amir was lovely from the get-go and made me feel at ease and listened to what I wanted so I booked in with him. I had all three done same day… I had some revision surgery at about 15 months after the initial, some liposuction around the flanks, and some additional skin removed from the chest. Hi, I decided to go to Bella Vou after researching my surgeon, Amir Nakhejevani, who is fully qualified with many years of experience. I wanted him to perform my abdominoplasty with liposuction. I found it a very reassuring experience when I first went to Bella Vou and realized how professionally the clinic was set up and how friendly all the staff were…After the procedure, I stayed in Tunbridge Wells for a week to have my daily lymphatic drainage massages. Which was included in the price. I found this to be very helpful and Nikki was not only very experienced but was also very knowledgeable of my procedure. The aftercare was also very good, I do not live very near but if needed, I could always have a video call in addition to visiting the clinic for any concerns I had. Everything was explained in great detail and I could not be happier with the results. A previous surgery had left me with an off centre tummy button and without the shape I was hoping for. I have had surgeries performed by Amir (tummy tuck, breast reduction, liposuction of chin, arms, thighs, back, and buccal fat reduction). I have had an outstanding experience with Amir Sadr at Bella Vou from start to finish. Firstly, at my initial consult, which was free of charge, and not hurried at all. Amir answered all my questions and made me feel really comfortable. He is clearly very passionate about what he does and he will only operate if he feels it is the right thing for the patient. I went on to have a tummy tuck and brow lift at Bella Vou in October 2021, receiving excellent care both on the day (general anaesthetic and an overnight stay), and in the following weeks during the healing process. A year later in October 2022 I had an upper eyelid lift (Blepharoplasty) under local anaesthetic walk in/walk out which I am recovering from now. I really cannot fault Bella Vou at all and would recommend them without hesitation… My healing process went pretty smoothly, but even so I returned to have checkups and dressings changed etc. which was very reassuring. From our very first meeting, I knew that I could trust Amir and his team to carry out the procedure that I wanted and ensure that everything went smoothly. My consultation was not rushed and Amir took the time to explain everything to me and what I could expect from it. He listened to my reasons for wanting the procedure and we discussed my best outcomes. On the day of my surgery, Amir visited me a number of times and he made me feel that I was top priority for him despite knowing that he had other surgeries/procedures that day. Following my procedure Amir came to see me and went through my surgery. When he showed me what he had done I was overjoyed, so much so in fact that I cried as I was overwhelmed with how amazing I looked!…Once again I received wonderful care and attention. I cannot thank Amir and his team enough for my whole experience and my final results which are more than I could have hoped for.

… I’ve lost 6st, and finished having babies, I hate my mummy pouch from a c section and 4 babies and too much cake. I decide I want a tummy tuck and knew the person I’d want to do it would be Hagen, So…a month later I was booked in for a full tummy tuck and flank lipo. He was available via text or phone in the run-up to answer any silly questions I came up with…Hagen came in and we had a laugh and joke and I felt completely at ease, Hagen explained the procedure, drew the lines and we ran through the consent form, I walked around to the theatre, relaxed and calm, and woke up in my compression garment, a new women… I go home and start my recovery, again any worries or concerns I have he is available and replies promptly every time… From start to finish this surgeon has gone above and beyond and I am so happy to of had the privilege of having my surgery done by him. He has cared about every single step of the process, as much as I have. He has listened to me, and never made me feel like I’ve bothered him (I have a lot ) I cannot reccomend him enough to anyone looking to have this procedure done.

So I am 3 weeks since my op I had no pain I had VDL and boob job best thing I did. Didn’t even notice I had a boob job no pain I must admit I was a little uncomfortable with my stomach but no pain so happy. Only problem is one part of my scar not healing great Dr Amir has been great seeing me all the time keeping an eye on it and so now I have a vacuum pack on to help the smallest part to heal. Everything else has healed so well the boobs look great and I am so happy. Bella Vou has been the best, nothing too much for them email them and they reply straight away, call they help I highly recommend feel like I have been looked after so well, and it shows with the results I have.
