Breast Reduction TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty is surgery to make the breasts smaller and reduce their weight. The procedure can also reshape and lift the breasts, so they are firmer and more pert.
Breast Reduction Surgery can be life-changing, easing back pain, improving posture, and increasing body-confidence.
Generally, if you haven't completed your family, then it’s sensible to avoid this surgery. During pregnancy, the breasts increase in size, therefore negate the effects of the operation.
Talk to your surgeon to fully understand the risks and benefits of surgery. It’s important to understand that Breast reduction surgery can damage nerves and milk-producing ducts and glands, making breastfeeding difficult. If your nipple and areola are still attached to the breast tissue beneath them, then there is a greater likelihood that you'll be able to nurse. However, if the nipple was removed and then placed on a reconstructed breast, damage to the nerves, milk ducts and breast tissue may diminish sensation in your nipples and limit your milk flow.
The nerve supply to the nipples is vital to breastfeeding, as they trigger the release of hormones that affect lactation and milk let-down. The overall length of time since surgery has an effect. With increasing time, you're more likely to regain nipple sensation and produce milk.
You won’t know how your milk supply will be affected until you start trying to nurse. If you still have sensation in the nipple, then you have a much better chance of having a full supply. There are several groups out there who help and guide women who have had breast reductions and are hoping to breastfeed.
Let your baby's doctor know about your surgery. They will need to keep a close eye on your baby's weight gain.
All surgery leaves scarring. Our surgeons will do their utmost to ensure the scar is as small and discreet as possible. Plastic surgeons, like the specialists at Bella Vou, are skilled in making incisions and suturing in ways that minimise scarring.
Areola scars generally heal well. They are pink for several weeks and then start to settle. They mature well in almost all cases, but it is impossible to make them completely invisible. If the healed scar is discoloured, Bella Vou offers medical tattooing to camouflage it and blend it with the surrounding skin tone.
The surgical bra will support and protect your breasts as they heal. It's essential to wear it night and day for six weeks. At your six-week check, your consultant will check your wounds and your breasts and let you know if it's OK to return to your usual bra.
There is a risk of nipple sensation changing following Breast Uplift and Breast Reduction Surgery. There is usually a temporary loss of sensation to the nipples, which may return as the swelling and bruising settles. Nipple sensation is generally derived from multiple sources from within the breast tissues. The reshaping and lifting of the breasts can interrupt the nerve supply, meaning that for some women, the change in nipple sensation can be permanent. Your surgeon will take time to answer all your questions and talk you through the risks and benefits of the procedures.

Step 1. Free, no-obligation consultation
Bella Vou offers every client a free consultation with an accredited cosmetic surgeon. There is no obligation to proceed to treatment. The consultation is an opportunity to discuss the concerns you have with your body and the size you would like your breasts to be,
The expert aesthetic surgeon will evaluate your breast volume and position, your skin elasticity, the size and position of the areola, and your body shape. They will plan surgery to ensure the breast looks natural, in proportion, and correctly placed on the chest. Mr Amir Nakhdjevani says:
‘We make sure that we advise people correctly about whether surgery is right for them. We treat everyone as if they were our family. At Bella Vou, we never pressurise people or try to sell procedures. It's always about giving an honest opinion and honest advice.’
Step 2. Meet your surgeon
You will be offered a further appointment with your consultant before proceeding to Breast Reduction. This will give you a chance to find out more about the procedure and to ask any questions you may have.
The specialist surgeon will take your medical history, examine your breasts to check for lumps, and ensure you’re healthy and fit for surgery.
Step 3. Preparation for Breast Reduction
The Bella Vou team will give you individual pre-operative advice to reduce your chance of bleeding and infection. As soon as your operation time is set, they’ll also let you know when to stop eating and drinking in preparation for your general anaesthetic
It’s essential to tell the team if you're on any medications. You may be asked to stop taking aspirin or anti-inflammatory tablets, which can increase the risk of bruising. It's also important to stop smoking cigarettes and e-cigarettes before and after surgery because they can disrupt the healing process.
On the day of your surgery, you’ll be welcomed to Bella Vou, given a gown to wear and escorted to the state-of-the-art operating theatre.
Step 4. What happens during Breast Reduction?
Breast Reduction is carried out under general anaesthetic. You may need to spend one night in hospital to rest and recover.
The type of incision will depend on the size of your breasts, the look you want, and the amount of tissue to be removed. The surgeons usually use one of two types of incision:
The anchor incision is most frequently used. This is around the areola, extending vertically down to the natural breast crease and horizontally across the crease.
Lollipop incision results in smaller scarring. There is a circular scar around the areola, which extend in a downward vertical scar to the breast crease. Both scars heal well and usually fade to become unobtrusive.
The surgeon will excise excess fat, skin, and glandular tissue from the underneath and sides of the breasts. They will carefully measure the breast volume and plan the amount to be removed before your surgery, to ensure you get the results you want.
Your consultant will then lift and reshape the breasts to achieve a natural, youthful contour. They will also reposition the nipples and areola to enhance and rejuvenate the breasts. The size of the areola can also be decreased to suit the proportions and shape of your new breasts.
The surgeon will suture the incisions closed using absorbable sutures that don't need to be removed. Finally, a dressing and supportive sports bra are applied.
Step 5. Recovery from Breast Reduction
You may need to stay in hospital overnight following the operation. The staff at Bella Vou will offer safe and effective pain relief, carefully monitor your recovery, and provide support every step of the way
You will be given a supportive sports bra to protect the breasts and maintain your comfort as you heal. After one week, the nurse and wound care specialist will check your breasts and the scars. After two weeks, you will be able to increase activity gradually. However, excess arm movement and strenuous or repetitive activity should be avoided for up to six weeks, when you should be able to return to your usual routine.
At around six weeks, your surgeon will check your progress and ensure that you are healthy and happy with your results. The Bella Vou staff are always available if you have problems or questions at any time.

Scars are a natural part of the healing process. The goal is to make your scar as small and discreet as possible. It is important to remember that cosmetic surgery scars and healing progression can vary depending on the type of procedure and the individual's healing process.

1 Week
In the first few days following breast reduction surgery, your incisions will be covered with surgical dressings or adhesive strips. It's normal to experience swelling, bruising, and mild discomfort during this time. Swelling and redness are common during this stage, and they gradually subside over the first few weeks. You may also notice that your scars appear raised and more noticeable during this early healing phase.

6 Weeks
Over the next few weeks to months, the scars will gradually mature and change in appearance, the incision site will begin to form a scar. The scar will be firm to the touch. This is a normal part of the healing process and the scar will begin to fade over time.
6 Months
Over the next few weeks and months, the scar will continue to mature and soften. It may change colour and become less noticeable. It is important to avoid exposing the scar to direct sunlight, as this can cause it to darken, some individuals may experience ongoing changes for up to 18-24 months post-surgery.
It is important to follow your surgeon's post-operative instructions carefully and attend all follow-up appointments to ensure the best possible healing and cosmetic results.

Amir is a lovely man who explains everything very clearly and treats you with respect. He is an excellent surgeon and I could not be more happy with the results. You are able to come into clinic as many times as you need, post surgery with any concerns you have, and are never made to feel a nuisance. I hasten to add, I had no major problems at all, but having never had surgery before, in the first few weeks had one or two queries. I would happily recommend Amir and his wonderful team to you.

Dr Schumacher was recommended to me by a friend and I can’t thank my friend enough for the recommendation. Not only did I have a professional consultation, but Dr Schumacher kept in contact with me right up to the operation date and afterwards. He really gives a personal approach and makes himself available to answer questions at any time… On the day of the op I was his last surgery of the day and even though he lives over an hour away from the hospital, he stayed at the hospital during my recovery period to ensure I was ok. Even the nurses commented that this is over and above what many other surgeons do and shows he is a good Doctor. He also took the time to contact my partner to let him know I was ok. I had a breast reduction last week with dr Schumacher and I couldn’t be happier. I have been putting this surgery off for a very long time. I was a 34 L and was in agony with my back, neck and shoulders. I have seen many surgeons over the years and never felt comfortable with any of them… When I met Dr Schumacher I immediately felt at ease and very comfortable with him. I told him my worries about surgery and Dr Schumacher gave me exercises to do at home to help with anxiety for the day of surgery. On my surgery day I saw Dr Schumacher and he made me feel at ease and he made me feel really calm. I saw Dr boon who was the anesthetist and again told him my concerns and he immediately started making me laugh and made me feel really safe and comfortable with him. I went down to theatre and Dr Schumacher, Dr Boon and his assistant made me laugh up until I went to sleep, I didn’t even realise that Dr Boon had put my IV in and before I knew it I was going to sleep. The whole process was a lot less painful then I imagined, it was easy and quite relaxing. … I’ve always struggled with the size of my breasts, before and after pregnancy and breastfeeding. I was forever buying bigger clothes or coming out of clothes shops in tears. Spending loads of money on big bras that I could only order online only to have to send them back for being uncomfortable or ill-fitting. I decided at 12 that I was going to get a breast reduction, however knew it was best to wait until I had finished university. The long wait gave me time to research all the surgeons in my area and decide who fit my needs best. I ended up with 3 I wanted to see and my first appointment was at Bella Vou. Amir was the only male surgeon I was seeing so was very nervous however as soon as I entered Bella Vou all my anxiety instantly lifted. Amir Nakhdjevani is a surgeon with excellent talent and professional integrity. I would say these are the two most important things to look for when trusting someone with your body. I have had surgeries performed by Amir (tummy tuck, breast reduction, liposuction of chin, arms, thighs, back, and buccal fat reduction). I have also spoken to Amir about other procedures I was interested in, but he was very honest and said the risks and expected outcomes wouldn’t make it worth my money/time/risk. From first speaking to Amir and his team I was instantly looked after with the very best of care possible… This operation is something that I had wanted since a young age due to my breasts never forming properly and too large and being something that caused me a lot of pain and meant I had absolutely zero body confidence, every day of my life… Amir talked me through the surgery afterwards and checked the following day for any bleeds of which there were none, once I had managed to have some food I was sent home to recover! At home I was quite sore but this is to be expected with any sort of surgery. I have been managing the discomfort with ibuprofen and paracetamol when needed and have just been making sure that so rest and listen to my body!! The hardest thing has been sleeping elevated on my back but I have managed this with lots of pillows and cushions and I’m slowly getting better at it!.. Dr Schumacher was recommended to me by a friend and I can’t thank my friend enough for the recommendation. Not only did I have a professional consultation, but Dr Schumacher kept in contact with me right up to the operation date and afterwards. He really gives a personal approach and makes himself available to answer questions at any time… On the day of the op I was his last surgery of the day and even though he lives over an hour away from the hospital, he stayed at the hospital during my recovery period to ensure I was ok. Even the nurses commented that this is over and above what many other surgeons do and shows he is a good Doctor. He also took the time to contact my partner to let him know I was ok. His after care didn’t stop there as Dr Schumacher rang the hospital that night to check I was ok before he went to bed, and rang them again first thing the next morning to check I was ok before they discharged me… I wish I had found him years ago as had been putting this surgery off for fear of anaesthetic!… I can’t recommend Dr Schumacher enough, The surgery went perfectly and looks great…

I had a breast reduction last week with dr Schumacher and I couldn’t be happier. I have been putting this surgery off for a very long time. I was a 34 L and was in agony with my back, neck and shoulders. I have seen many surgeons over the years and never felt comfortable with any of them… When I met Dr Schumacher I immediately felt at ease and very comfortable with him. I told him my worries about surgery and Dr Schumacher gave me exercises to do at home to help with anxiety for the day of surgery. On my surgery day I saw Dr Schumacher and he made me feel at ease and he made me feel really calm. I saw Dr boon who was the anesthetist and again told him my concerns and he immediately started making me laugh and made me feel really safe and comfortable with him. I went down to theatre and Dr Schumacher, Dr Boon and his assistant made me laugh up until I went to sleep, I didn’t even realise that Dr Boon had put my IV in and before I knew it I was going to sleep. The whole process was a lot less painful then I imagined, it was easy and quite relaxing. Many women can relate to feeling uncomfortable, top-heavy and unable (or too self conscious) to play sport due to an over sized chest.
