Dermal Fillers

Dermal Fillers are one of the most popular anti-ageing treatment regimens. The fillers are a popular choice due to their versatility in volumising and lifting the skin and the instant results with minimal downtime. This leaves a more contoured and youthful appearance. The most common treated areas include:

  • Lip fillers - to define and contour the lips or make lips more voluminous
  • Smokers lines - vertical lines above the lips can be softened/ smoothed out
  • Nasolabial lines - these extend from the nose to the corner of the mouth
  • Marionette lines - these are lines between the mouth and chin
  • Cheek and tear trough - underneath the eyes and around the cheeks - filler here can give a more sculpted appearance to the cheek and soften the tear trough
  • Crows feet/glabella and forehead lines - commonly addressed with anti-wrinkle injections but if they are resistant then you might need some filler as well

This is a commonly performed and safe treatment which has an effect that lasts for almost a year. Maybe you want to look your best for a special occasion. It may well be a good treatment if you are troubled by lines around the lips or by deep creases between lips and cheeks. Many women of all ages would like to have a fuller lips and this can be achieved conveniently with little or no down-time after your visit to the clinic. Lines in other areas can also be treated and minor changes to the profile of the nose can also be made with fillers.

Wrinkles, creases and lines in these areas can be treated by filling the skin with a specially formulated gel 'filler'. This is injected into or under the dermis (the deepest layer of the skin), pushing up and flattening the crease or wrinkle.

Dermal Fillers for the Lips

Voluminous lips are more sought after than ever before. Non-surgical cosmetic procedures such as lip filler injections have proved an effective way to provide a more puckered look. Although some lip fillers are permanent or very long lasting, most patients and practitioners prefer temporary lip enhancement through dermal lip injections which are effective for nearly a year.

Your specialist will assess your case and help you to choose the most suitable type of dermal filler. Prior to injection, local anaesthetic paste is usually applied for approximately 45 minutes and cooling packs are also helpful to minimise discomfort and bruising from the injections. Once the filler has been injected your specialist will massage the injected area briefly to ensure that the filler is spread evenly and this completes the treatment.

You can return to normal activities although you should avoid very strenuous activity for 2 days and avoid pressure, massaging or interference with the treated area for 5 days; this includes sleeping or resting on the treated area so you should try to sleep lying on your back.

Some bruising or swelling can occur after injections but this is typically minor and settles within a few days. Injections to fill the lip do swell a bit more in the first few days after treatment. Very rarely an allergic reaction could occur.

If you are known to have an allergy, if you are pregnant or breastfeeding you should not have fillers. If you have a cold sore or another skin complaint adjacent to the intended area of treatment you should wait until this has settled before having a filler.

If you don't like the look you achieve with fillers this can be reversed by injecting an enzyme which dissolves most types of filler.

On the day of treatment you should not have makeup on the area to be treated. You can use make-up again as normal the day after your filler treatment.

We advise against having filler around the time of the month as the injections tend to be more uncomfortable despite local anaesthetic and there are far more episodes of patients feeling feint, or nauseated following the injections, during this time. We also advise to not have alcohol the day of the filler as this can give greater levels of bruising and swelling.

Here's some helpful tips to minimising bruising and swelling from fillers:

Before fillers:

  • Avoid alcohol a day before treatment
  • Avoid herbal medication for 1 week prior
  • Any blood thinning treatments will increase the risk of bleeding and bruising and should ideally be stopped 1 week before
  • Prior to treatment the use of local anaesthetic and cold packs
  • Avoid fillers if due to menstruate

After filler:

  • Reapplication of cold packs
  • Sleep on a couple of pillows
  • Cold/ice drinks (without alcohol)
