Abnormally shaped or scarred nipples can be corrected with non-surgical procedures such as tattooing to hide the scars – this is a temporary solution with minimum down-time but would require repeating. Depending on the extent of treatment, topical treatment with steroids may be required or formal surgery to address the problem.
Is this right for me?
This will depend on the problem that you would like to have corrected. The treatment can be non-surgical such as tattooing or lightening peels to hide scars for example; thick scarring may benefit from topical treatments of silicon based creams or steroid injections. Finally, if non-surgical methods fail, then a surgical option is available. This can range from simply refashioning of the scar to make it less obvious to a complete reconstruction of the entire nipple areola complex.
There are two main techniques - one which preserves the milk ducts and the other that does not. Generally, we advise to complete your family prior to contemplating this surgery. Your breast and nipples will change following pregnancy and therefore prior surgery may affect your ability to breast feed.
What does this involve?
Inverted nipples can be treated non-surgically through suction devices or by the use of nipple piercings to maintain a projected nipple. Surgical treatment involves removing the tethering that is causing the inverted appearance.
