Chin Reduction Surgery (Genioplasty)

Genioplasty or Mentoplasty are the technical names for surgeries designed to reshape the chin. If your chin is too prominent, a Chin Reduction can create a harmonious balance between it and the rest of your facial features while if you feel your chin is too small, a Chin Enhancement or Augmentation could improve the proportion of your chin in relation to the rest of your features.

A prominent chin can be reduced (horizontally) by removing some of the chin bone (a horizontal reduction genioplasty) to create a desired contour or cutting the bone and sliding the chin backwards (a sliding genioplasty) then fixing it into its new position.

A small or recessive chin can be enhanced by cutting the bone and sliding the chin forwards (a sliding genioplasty) then fixing it into place. Alternatively, a chin implant can be inserted in front of the chin bone and under the muscles in a specially created pocket.  

For a reduction requiring the removal of some chin bone (a horizontal reduction genioplasty) a small incision is made inside the lower lip through which the chin bone is recontoured to the desired shape. The incision is then closed using dissolvable sutures that don’t need to be removed and no scarring is visible.

For a reduction requiring the chin bone to be slid backwards (a sliding genioplasty) a small incision is made inside the lower lip and the chin bone is cut and slid backwards into the desired position. Once in place, small titanium plates and screws are used to fix the bone into place. The incision is then closed using dissolvable sutures that don’t need to be removed and no scarring is visible.

For an enhancement requiring the chin bone to be slid forwards (a sliding genioplasty) a small incision is made inside the lower lip and the chin bone is cut and slid forwards into the desired position. Once in place small titanium plates and screws are used to fix the bone into place. The incision is then closed using dissolvable sutures that don’t need to be removed and no scarring is visible.

For a chin enhancement requiring a chin implant, an incision is made under the chin with the specially designed implant inserted between the bone and muscle. The incision is then closed using dissolvable sutures that don’t need to be removed.

The dissolvable sutures don’t require removal and usually takes four months to fully dissolve. You can resume light activities in two weeks post-surgery and return to driving 3 weeks post-surgery. Physical work or sports should only be resumed 6 weeks post-surgery.

For reductions or enhancements with incisions inside the lower lip, scars will be hidden within the mouth. For chin implants, the scars are placed below the chin, this scar will eventually fade to a fine white line.
