Elizabeth, 51, from Norfolk, felt self-conscious about her heavy eyelids. In April 2021, she decided to have upper eyelid surgery with skin and muscle excision. Here she shares her experience.
I had been feeling unhappy with my eyes for some years. I felt very self-conscious of how heavy they looked, and in every photo I thought I looked tired. I felt old and invisible, and it was making me miserable. I wore glasses all the time to hide my eyes, and found I had boxes of contact lenses building up that I just couldn’t use. I also felt really sad at not being able to wear beautiful coloured eyeshadows and eyeliner as I had done in my 20s and 30s.
I had been considering upper eyelid surgery for a few years, but I had many assumptions and fears which created personal barriers to having the surgery. I felt torn between the longing to feel more confident and better about myself on the one hand, and the sense that I should be grateful for all I have as I have grown older on the other. I also feared the procedure and what it would entail before I fully understood the process.
I did not know where to start in researching the right surgeon and clinic for the procedure. But after speaking to friends and colleagues, Bella Vou was recommended to me on more than one occasion, and the clinical team at Bella Vou were regularly featured online in social media posts and interviews.

After reading many, many reviews, I realised that it was only me and my fears that were getting in the way of me being the best version of myself, so I took the plunge and booked a consultation.
I had a FaceTime consultation with Dr Amir Nakhdjevani and he was very informative and reassured me of the process. I felt at ease and confident, and I knew I could trust him and the rest of the team right away. I felt confident that I was choosing the right surgeon and clinic for my procedure.
The communication from the clinic pre op was great and the team was always available to answer any questions and reassure me. Whilst excited for the end result, I was also incredibly nervous about the procedure, but the team is so friendly, caring and helpful and made me feel very comfortable and relaxed every step of the way. Everything was explained to me before, during and after in relation to the procedure and post-op care, which put my mind at ease and helped me to feel relaxed and in control of the situation.
I travelled to Tunbridge Wells with a friend, and we had to wait a little while before the surgery so we had a wander around The Pantiles. Going into Bella Vou, I was made to feel very welcome and comfortable. I didn’t feel like I was on my own, I felt looked after. Dr Amir was calm, gentle and reassuring. The procedure was very quick and pain free. I was in and out in just over an hour.

I had my procedure in the evening, so got into bed as soon as I got home. I was unprepared for how tired I would feel the next day, so I would recommend a day to yourself to rest. Swelling and bruising are an expected part of the process and applying witch hazel provided instant relief from any minimal discomfort and itching. My right eye took a little bit longer to heal than my left, but the itchiness and numbness has gone now. The scars are really fine and fairly invisible, and I’m taking good care of them by wearing sunglasses in the sun.
I had a post-op appointment via FaceTime with the clinical team at week one, who were pleased with my progress. The team also sent me some beautiful flowers which was such a lovely gesture.
Since the surgery, I have felt so much more like me. I can now wear beautiful eyeshadows, which can actually be seen and don’t smudge or crease throughout the day, and I am wearing contact lenses far more often. I have even noticed that my peripheral vision has improved. I am happy to have my picture taken again, and I no longer feel invisible. I have also had lots of comments about how well I look - a friend I’ve known for a very long time said that I look how I did 20 or 30 years ago!

In November 2023 I booked a full abdominoplasty and vaser lipo with Amir. I visited for my initial consult and knew straight away that i had found the right surgeon, Amir was compassionate, knowledgeable and extremely professional. Fast forward to the 18th of January and my surgery day, Amir was understanding of how nerve wracking surgery can be and i felt at ease from the moment I walked into the building. I was in theatre a lot longer than planned due to an umbilical hernia and extra muscle repair, Amir is a perfectionist and made sure all was well and to his high standards before finishing the surgery. I’ve had a minor umbilical complication which is unfortunately one of the risks associated with this procedure. But the aftercare I have received from Amir and his team has been second to none and I could not be happier with my results. I look forward to my umbilical correction in a few months.
