Male Breast Reduction Surgery (Gynaecomastia)
|Recovery||1 - 3 weeks|
|Addresses||Excess fat and tissue from male breasts|
Gynecomastia, is a condition where male breast tissue becomes over-developed or enlarged, and can affect males of any age. Excess chest tissue or “man boobs” can be very embarrassing and cause distress for men of all ages. Gynecomastia can be a result of various factors including weight gain or as side effects to taking certain medications, but is usually a result of hormone imbalances such as decreasing levels of the male sex hormone testosterone with age. Male breast reduction surgery with or without liposuction may be used to treat enlarged male breasts.
Is this right for me?
If you are a man distressed by the appearance of having breasts then it is important to get it checked out to make sure there is no underlying cause for the development of your man boobs.
If there is a cause identified then often it can be corrected by non-surgical means. Such as changing the medication that may have caused you to develop breasts.
However most cases don't have a cause and need to be treated surgically. Depending on severity the surgery can vary from liposuction to excision and skin removal and areola reduction.
Your recovery will be within a few weeks but the swelling will still improve weekly until 3 to 6 months down the line at which point you can see the final result and symmetry.
What the procedure involves
The surgical procedure can be performed under local anaesthetic for milder cases with liposuction and mild skin excisions.
Our plastic surgeons will be able to advise you of your suitability. Larger more severe cases require general anaesthetic and hospital stay for one night.
Often as a result of weight loss excess skin of the breast will also need to be removed for body contouring.
More severe cases require pressure garments to speed their recovery and reduce the swelling. All patients are required to return for follow up at about a week where they can be assessed by their surgeon.
All sutures are absorbable and will dissolve by 1 to 3 weeks.
