Hair Transplant

A hair transplant will result in an improved appearance and greater self-confidence, a permanent solution to hair loss, and a natural look and feel. The hair that is transferred is your own hair and is therefore permanent.

Is this right for me?

If you have lost hair early in your life due to genetics in your family or as a result of trauma, it may not only affect you cosmetically but psychologically. Most people who have lost their hair are self conscious about their appearance in public and when looking to date.

Most people are eligible to have hair transplant. This is a permanent natural solution to hair loss. You could suffer from receding hair loss or loss of density within your existing hair. There may be other areas such as beard, eyebrow or eyelash that has been depleted of hair due to repetitive trauma or single injury which can now be treated as a single stage under local anaesthetic.

Hair transplantation is labour intensive and requires delicate manual transplantation to produce natural hair. Once you have the hair transplant the transplanted hairs initially fall out and start to re-grow in a few months. Month by month the density increases and you will be see the final result by 18 months.

What does this involve?

We are now able to transplant individual hair follicles from one part of the body to another using FUE (Follicilar Unit Exraction) or FUT (Follicular Unit Transplant) whilst preserving their growth physiology and anatomy. This permanent solution means that the transplanted hair follicles will survive and grow as they once did in that area.

Each follicle is transplanted manually for a truly natural and lifelong appearance. Hair transplant techniques have come a long way from the old punch graft techniques, which created an unnatural 'doll hair' appearance.

The procedure is carried out under long lasting local anaesthetic, which makes the slow process of FUE/ FUT hair transplantation virtually painless. Your scalp will be quite swollen on the day of surgery and this swelling can take anywhere from 1 week to 10 days to settle. The swelling can spread down towards the eyebrows (effects of gravity). This is temporary and does settle.

You will be limited to gentle shampooing for the first week following the surgery. We will give you full after care instructions following the surgery. You will be reviewed in the clinic at 1 week and 2 weeks following the surgery.

Yes. The hairs that have been transplanted will always remain.

Everyone heals differently, and we cannot show you what you will specifically look like. But what we will do is show you our extensive album of before and after pictures, so you can get an idea of the look you are likely to achieve.

All the sutures are absorbable under the skin and so there’s no need for removal and the scar will be a very fine line within the hair.

This is something that is based on a number of factors. First and foremost – what is your overall expectation and if this within the remit of what can be carried out surgically. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in detail and will show you the results you can expect. Secondly, what other factors are present? The quality of the skin; other medical factors; smoking; lifestyle habits will all be influential in determining the outcome. It is not just the surgery alone.

We will show you the results you can expect with the chosen treatment option and we will go through in detail the risks and benefits. Our surgeons will discuss your treatment holistically and give you a full picture of what to expect and address your concerns.

This varies on your donor area and many other factors that will be discussed with you at your consultation. Generally up to 4,000 hairs can be transplanted in one day.

Sometimes the existing hair may go into shock and you may develop some shedding of the existing hair. This is a temporary effect as the roots are still present and the hairs will grow through on their net cycle.

You will generally need to wait for 2 years following your initially surgery. This will allow the scalp skin to relax and allow enough laxity to remove another strip.

The hair that is harvested and implanted in your scalp will eventually shed. The hair follicles all exist in different phases of growth - the growth phase, resting phase and shedding phase. When the hair is harvested, we do no t know which hairs will be in each phase. Therefore, some hairs may shed straight away. Others may continue to grow and some may remain static. This is all normal.

Even if the hair sheds, the roots of the hairs are embedded in the scalp skin and these will then start to grow. It usually takes 18 months to two years for the hair to grow through. So you will not see your final result till this time.

We specialise in hair restoration for both men and women. FUE Hair transplant techniques can be used to restore depleted eyebrows, eyelashes, beards and transplantation within scars such as burns in hair bearing areas.

FUE (Follicular Unit Extraction) involves removing healthy hair follicles directly from a donor area on the scalp (usually at the back of the head where the hair is plentiful) and grafting them onto the bald or thinning areas.

This method of hair transplant involves removing the strip of skin and hair from the back of the scalp. The strip method is a very effective way of gaining a high yield of viable hairs and a greater quantity. The scar heals very well and is very discrete.

With this technique the hairs from the back of the head are harvested individually and so there will be no scar. That's why it's called a scar-less technique.

The main methods of hair transplant surgery are harvesting individual follicles (FUE) or taking the strip (FUT). Both methods are acceptable ways of treating the scalp. Your surgeon will assess you to determine which is the best option for you.

The advantages of the strip method are the greater number of follicles that can be attained and the number of multiple grafts. The donor site scar is well hidden and does not tend to stretch as we close the wound in a particular way to prevent the scar from stretching.

The FUE method does not leave a long scar and the hairs are taken from the back of the scalp. Although there is no visible scar, this can sometimes cause the back of the scalp to thin and can also is difficult to use a second time as the donor site can then have the appearance of thinning.

FUE is considered the scar less technique as the individual hairs are harvested. This results in no scar at the donor site. This is an effective procedure for the crown and generally the yields are far less than FUT. Although you will not see any visible scars, these are still present as each individual harvested follicle will leave a scar on removal, albeit typically barely evident. The advantage of FUT is that there is far less risk of damaging the follicle roots on harvest with this method. Each hair is individually separated from the strip and generally the hair yield is far greater. This will therefore lead to greater density which is the key to a good hair transplant.

The treatment will vary depending on how many hairs are required. Finance options are available.

You can wash your hair the next day as instructed by your surgeon with the proposed shampoo.

Up to 18 months you will continue to see improvement.

With FUT technique there will be a scar at the back of the head which the hair covers. However with latest techniques we can suture the scar in a way that makes hairs grow through the scar, resulting in only a feint scar outline being visible, even with very short hair styles.

You will be swollen for at least 1 week. The bruising is minimal to negligible. You scalp will be uncomfortable for the first few days following the transplant. Simple analgesia with paracetamol will help.

You will not have a definitive result until at least 12 – 18 months from the time of your hair transplant.
