Brow Lift (Browplasty)
As we age, the skin over the forehead starts to lose its elasticity, causing the skin to sag. This will subsequently cause the eyes to look tired due to overhanging of the eyebrows. This may also result in an overall aged appearance of the face as a whole. Brow lift surgery is a cosmetic procedure that lifts the area directly above the eyebrow, thus rejuvenating the area. If your eyebrows are resting in a lower position, then this surgery will help to elevate them back to their normal position.
Is this right for me?
You may consider a brow lift if:
- Your eyebrow creates a tired, sad or grumpy appearance
- You have deep horizontal creases across the forehead
- You have frown lines or furrows between the eyebrows or across the top of your nose
- You have excess skin hanging over your eyes
What does this involve?
Brow lifts are performed under general anesthetic meaning most patients can go home after the procedure the same or the next day. The surgery involves placing several short incisions in the hairline. Using an endoscope (a narrow light telescope and camera, through which the procedure is performed with small special instruments) the forehead skin is lifted and repositioned and fixed into your desired place.
Brow lift surgery carries minimal risk. Some of the potential complications that may occur (though highly unlikely) include hematoma (an accumulation of blood under the skin), infection, and reactions to anesthetic. Forehead Lift incisions are usually quite inconspicuous and hidden from view; however, this is not entirely predictable due to individual variations in healing. Upper eyelid skin is usually tightened and lifted as an added benefit following brow lift surgery.

After the surgery, initial discomfort is easily controlled with oral medication. Swelling in the upper face is common in the first 5 days following brow lift surgery, however swelling gradually diminishes daily. Sutures or staples are removed within 10 days with most swelling and bruising gone in 7-10 days.
Anti-wrinkle injections can result in slight elevation of the eyebrows, but those results would be much more subtle and shorter term than the long lasting results you would get from brow lift surgery.
Although brow lift surgery offers a long lasting solution to combat the signs of ageing, there is no guarantee that your wrinkles will go away as the main benefit of brow lift surgery is lifting of the brow with secondary lifting of upper eyelid skin.
Yes you can. Sometimes a forehead lift is combined with an upper blepharoplasty, if there is also additional skin above the eyelid. Following the brow lift, if there is still a sufficient degree of laxity above the eyelids, then this can be removed following the upper eyelid (blepharoplasty) procedure.
When a brow lift, facelift, upper and lower blepharoplasty and cheek lifts are combined together this is commonly referred to as a full facelift.
Your plastic surgeon will examine your bone structure, brow position, skin elasticity, and the thickness of your skin. This will help to determine what will be the most appropriate surgery for you.
