The Nipple-areolar complex comprises the nipple and surrounding dark coloured skin that is called the areola. The areola can occasionally be quite large, taking up a larger proportion of the breast than desired; or it can be asymmetrical with one side not matching the other side. Therefore, areola correction surgery reduces the size of both or is carried out to help symmetrise the areola.
Is this right for me?
Your surgeon will discuss the operative options with you. This will generally entail reducing the larger areola to match the size of the smaller areola.
What does this involve?
There are a number of different methods of removing the extra areola skin. The skin can be removed as a do-nut shape of skin and this can place the scar either on the edge of the areola; within the areola itself; or at the base of the nipple. The length of the areola can also determine the scarring and if you have a more oblong areola, then you might either require a 2-stage procedure to reduce the size; or a lollipop scar. Your surgeon will discuss which option is best for you.
Your nipples can be reduced in size at the same time if this is a bother to you (Nipple Correction). Otherwise, the surgery just concentrates on the pigmented skin surrounding the nipple.
Frequently Asked Questions
What is the recovery like?
The surgery is carried out in our operating rooms as a day-case procedure. The stitches are dissolvable and do not require removal as the body will re-absorb them. A simple dressing is placed over the areola and kept in place for up to one week. A member of the clinical team will review you at one week to ensure all is healing as it should be.
