TREATMENT OVERVIEW
Breast Reduction or Reduction Mammoplasty is surgery to make the breasts smaller and reduce their weight. The procedure can also reshape and lift the breasts, so they are firmer and more pert.
Breast reduction surgery has the power to transform lives by relieving back pain, improving posture, and boosting body confidence. Scarring can be a significant concern for prospective patients with dark skin tones. However, there are always ways to minimise the risk of noticeable scars without compromising the final results.
Hyperpigmentation, which leads to more prominent scars, is a common risk for people with melanated skin tones, whether resulting from accidental injuries or surgical incisions. Furthermore, individuals with darker skin may have a higher susceptibility to keloid scarring and an increased risk of complications. However, this does not mean that surgery is off-limits for darker skin individuals; it simply highlights the need for increased care and awareness. There are always ways to minimise the risk of noticeable scars without compromising the surgery.
All surgery leaves scarring. Our surgeons will do their utmost to ensure the scar is as small and discreet as possible. Plastic surgeons, like the specialists at Bella Vou, are skilled in making incisions and suturing in ways that minimise scarring.
Individuals with darker skin tones have an increased susceptibility to developing keloid and hypertrophic scarring.
Keloid Scars are characterized by hard, smooth excessive scar tissue growth that can be larger than the original wound. These raised, reddish nodules form at the site of the injury and may take weeks or months to fully develop.
Hypertrophic Scars have a similar appearance to keloids but are more common. They do not grow as large as keloids and may fade over time. These scars are confined to the injury site and commonly occur on the knees, shoulders, abdomen, breasts, and breastbone.
The good news is that both types of scars can be effectively treated with monthly injections of long-lasting cortisone into the keloid. After several injections, keloids may become less noticeable and flatten within 3 to 6 months. Hypertrophic scars often respond well to this treatment. Your Consultant Plastic Surgeon, in collaboration with the in-house scar clinic, will create a personalized treatment plan to ensure the best possible outcomes are achieved.
Generally, if you haven't completed your family, then it’s sensible to avoid this surgery. During pregnancy, the breasts increase in size, therefore negate the effects of the operation.
Talk to your surgeon to fully understand the risks and benefits of surgery. It’s important to understand that Breast reduction surgery can damage nerves and milk-producing ducts and glands, making breastfeeding difficult. If your nipple and areola are still attached to the breast tissue beneath them, then there is a greater likelihood that you'll be able to nurse. However, if the nipple was removed and then placed on a reconstructed breast, damage to the nerves, milk ducts and breast tissue may diminish sensation in your nipples and limit your milk flow.
The nerve supply to the nipples is vital to breastfeeding, as they trigger the release of hormones that affect lactation and milk let-down. The overall length of time since surgery has an effect. With increasing time, you're more likely to regain nipple sensation and produce milk.
You won’t know how your milk supply will be affected until you start trying to nurse. If you still have sensation in the nipple, then you have a much better chance of having a full supply. There are several groups out there who help and guide women who have had breast reductions and are hoping to breastfeed.
Let your baby's doctor know about your surgery. They will need to keep a close eye on your baby's weight gain.
The surgical bra will support and protect your breasts as they heal. It's essential to wear it night and day for six weeks. At your six-week check, your consultant will check your wounds and your breasts and let you know if it's OK to return to your usual bra.
There is a risk of nipple sensation changing following Breast Uplift and Breast Reduction Surgery. There is usually a temporary loss of sensation to the nipples, which may return as the swelling and bruising settles. Nipple sensation is generally derived from multiple sources from within the breast tissues. The reshaping and lifting of the breasts can interrupt the nerve supply, meaning that for some women, the change in nipple sensation can be permanent. Your surgeon will take time to answer all your questions and talk you through the risks and benefits of the procedures.

Spending loads of money on big bras that I could only order online only to have to send them back for being uncomfortable or ill-fitting. Amir Nakhdjevani is a surgeon with excellent talent and professional integrity. I would say these are the two most important things to look for when trusting someone with your body. From the first consultation, he went through absolutely everything with me thoroughly, I felt informed throughout, rather then just showing me all perfect images and “salesman” stuff, he also showed me the potential risks and what could go wrong with my recovery due to certain risk factors, so I felt fully informed before making my decision. This was important to me. I had been for 3 other consultations elsewhere and no other surgeon explained to me as well as Amir did. As well as this, Amir takes so much pride in his work and its very clear when he shows you his photos of his previous patients. Dr Schumacher was recommended to me by a friend and I can’t thank my friend enough for the recommendation. Not only did I have a professional consultation, but Dr Schumacher kept in contact with me right up to the operation date and afterwards. He really gives a personal approach and makes himself available to answer questions at any time… On the day of the op I was his last surgery of the day and even though he lives over an hour away from the hospital, he stayed at the hospital during my recovery period to ensure I was ok. I was a 34 L and was in agony with my back, neck and shoulders. I have seen many surgeons over the years and never felt comfortable with any of them… When I met Dr Schumacher I immediately felt at ease and very comfortable with him. I told him my worries about surgery and Dr Schumacher gave me exercises to do at home to help with anxiety for the day of surgery. Spending loads of money on big bras that I could only order online only to have to send them back for being uncomfortable or ill-fitting. I decided at 12 that I was going to get a breast reduction, however knew it was best to wait until I had finished university. The long wait gave me time to research all the surgeons in my area and decide who fit my needs best. I ended up with 3 I wanted to see and my first appointment was at Bella Vou. Amir was the only male surgeon I was seeing so was very nervous however as soon as I entered Bella Vou all my anxiety instantly lifted. My initial meet with Amir was so positive I cancelled my two other consultations that day and booked my surgery date in with him! He is an awesome guy and I have never met someone so passionate about their job, he is such a perfectionist and has given me so much confidence in my body that I didn’t know I could have. I am only 3 weeks post op but I am wildly in love with my new boobs! every time I look at them I am in shock they are mine, the whole experience still feels so surreal (in the best way). The whole team at Bella Vou have been so warm and supportive and I just couldn’t imagine going through this journey with any other group of people.

Amir Nakhdjevani is a surgeon with excellent talent and professional integrity. I would say these are the two most important things to look for when trusting someone with your body. I have had surgeries performed by Amir (tummy tuck, breast reduction, liposuction of chin, arms, thighs, back, and buccal fat reduction). I have also spoken to Amir about other procedures I was interested in, but he was very honest and said the risks and expected outcomes wouldn’t make it worth my money/time/risk. I very much appreciate this honesty and transparency in a consultant, as many others I’m sure would be happy to take my money and not be concerned about the outcome. I was calm cool and collected when I went under because I knew I could trust Amir to deliver exactly what I wanted, he has done just that and so so so much more. I’ve had a Breasts Reduction Surgery at Bella Vou 6 weeks ago. It has been life changing experience. I suffered with back pain and shoulders pain for years due to bad posture from the heavy weight of my breasts… All the staff were friendly, professional and caring. I received fantastic support, especially from the night staff, whom were checking on me frequently to make sure that I was ok. Dr Amir was very friendly, skilful and he achieved everything what I wanted. I couldn’t be happier now. I gained lots of confidence with my body and my back pain is gone. It has only been 6 weeks since the surgery but I am already fully recovered and back to doing my daily routine. The communication with the clinic has been at very high standard throughout my treatment journey. I couldn’t imagine going abroad to have my surgery done as this amazing Bella Vou clinic is just on the doorstep. Didn’t even notice I had a boob job no pain I must admit I was a little uncomfortable with my stomach but no pain so happy. Only problem is one part of my scar not healing great Dr Amir has been great seeing me all the time keeping an eye on it and so now I have a vacuum pack on to help the smallest part to heal. Everything else has healed so well the boobs look great and I am so happy. This operation was something I had wanted for over 15 years at this point after developing large breasts very young and having maintained my weight continuously after losing 5 stone in the 2 years prior. From first speaking to Amir and his team I was instantly looked after with the very best of care possible… This operation is something that I had wanted since a young age due to my breasts never forming properly and too large and being something that caused me a lot of pain and meant I had absolutely zero body confidence, every day of my life… Amir talked me through the surgery afterwards and checked the following day for any bleeds of which there were none, once I had managed to have some food I was sent home to recover! At home I was quite sore but this is to be expected with any sort of surgery. I have been managing the discomfort with ibuprofen and paracetamol when needed and have just been making sure that so rest and listen to my body!! The hardest thing has been sleeping elevated on my back but I have managed this with lots of pillows and cushions and I’m slowly getting better at it!.. I am so grateful for everything they have all done and the way they have treated me throughout the entire process to date… Already I feel like a different life is ahead of me where I will be able to wear what clothes I like, not worry about constant back pain, and most importantly for me I can look in the mirror and keep my eyes open!

Dr Schumacher was recommended to me by a friend and I can’t thank my friend enough for the recommendation. Not only did I have a professional consultation, but Dr Schumacher kept in contact with me right up to the operation date and afterwards. He really gives a personal approach and makes himself available to answer questions at any time… On the day of the op I was his last surgery of the day and even though he lives over an hour away from the hospital, he stayed at the hospital during my recovery period to ensure I was ok. Even the nurses commented that this is over and above what many other surgeons do and shows he is a good Doctor. He also took the time to contact my partner to let him know I was ok. His after care didn’t stop there as Dr Schumacher rang the hospital that night to check I was ok before he went to bed, and rang them again first thing the next morning to check I was ok before they discharged me… I wish I had found him years ago as had been putting this surgery off for fear of anaesthetic!… I can’t recommend Dr Schumacher enough, The surgery went perfectly and looks great…

I had a breast reduction last week with dr Schumacher and I couldn’t be happier. I have been putting this surgery off for a very long time. I was a 34 L and was in agony with my back, neck and shoulders. I have seen many surgeons over the years and never felt comfortable with any of them… When I met Dr Schumacher I immediately felt at ease and very comfortable with him. I told him my worries about surgery and Dr Schumacher gave me exercises to do at home to help with anxiety for the day of surgery. On my surgery day I saw Dr Schumacher and he made me feel at ease and he made me feel really calm. I saw Dr boon who was the anesthetist and again told him my concerns and he immediately started making me laugh and made me feel really safe and comfortable with him. I went down to theatre and Dr Schumacher, Dr Boon and his assistant made me laugh up until I went to sleep, I didn’t even realise that Dr Boon had put my IV in and before I knew it I was going to sleep. The whole process was a lot less painful then I imagined, it was easy and quite relaxing. I wish I had met dr Schumacher years ago, he has changed my life and I want to thank him for everything he has done for me. Highly recommend dr Schumacher.

Many women can relate to feeling uncomfortable, top-heavy and unable (or too self conscious) to play sport due to an over sized chest. While many women discussed breast enlargement, I dreamed of breast reduction, but fear always got the better of me, I was overwhelmed with a sense of dread whenever considering surgery and a general anaesthetic. Fortunately, I bumped into a longstanding acquaintance and, before long, we stumbled onto the subject of plastic surgery.
