Labia Reduction (Labiaplasty)

Labia reduction is carried out in some women who dislike the large size of their labia minora. This may be a cause of embarrassment with a sexual partner or can cause a degree of discomfort in tight pants, during sporting activities or during sexual intercourse. Some patients are born with this (congenital) and others develop this secondary to child-birth or through the natural ageing process.

Is this right for me?

Some feel that over time their labia have enlarged and elongated causing discomfort in clothing, during sexual intercourse, or may be affected by disease of the area. Others want their labia to look a certain way and choose to have a labiaplasty for cosmetic reasons.

It's not uncommon for people's relationships to be negatively affected as a result by an enlarged or uncommonly shaped labia and it can make some patients feel very self-conscious.

In the hands of an experienced plastic or cosmetic surgeon this is a safe straightforward procedure to permanently reduce the size of your labia and get you back to feeling your best. The benefits of labia reduction surgery include increased comfort during normal activities such as exercise; reduced discomfort during intercourse; reduced visibility of labia in clothing; and an enhanced aesthetic appearance of the area.

What does this involve?

During Labia reduction surgery (Labiaplasty), the excess tissue is removed to keep the size, shape and colour symmetrical and looking natural with scars hidden within the natural folds of skin, resulting in a defined and neatly shaped labia.

For most patients, the surgery takes approximately 60 to 90 mins, the scars are virtually invisible and reduction in the size of the labia not only gives comfort in clothing and during sex but it can also improve the cosmetic appearance of the labia.

Our cosmetic surgeons will listen to your concerns and needs and discuss the surgical options which best suit you.

Investing time in researching to find the very best surgeon for your procedure through specialist medical review websites, personal recommendation and a thorough private consultation with your surgeon are likely to give you the reassurance every patient should have before proceeding with a procedure. In addition, the surgeon will need to consider the following factors:

First and foremost – what is your overall expectation and if this within the remit of what can be carried out surgically. Your surgeon will discuss this with you in detail and will show you the results you can expect. If they can't show you many other examples from other patients then this could indicate that they may be less experienced in carrying out this procedure.

Secondly, what other factors are present? The quality of the skin; other medical factors; smoking; lifestyle habits will all be influential in determining the outcome. It is not just the surgery or surgeon's talents alone.

With labiaplasty surgery, this is generally quite bespoke surgery and the amount of skin or extra tissue you want removed and how you would like the area to look will be a very personal thing and something that our experienced surgeons go through. Our surgeons will discuss your treatment holistically and give you a full picture of what to expect and address your concerns, with such an intimate of your body where many nerves are present it is vital that your surgeon is very familiar with performing this procedure.

Patients can experience some swelling and discomfort for a week. After a week the swelling will start to subside and discomfort eases.

You will have to wait at least 4 weeks prior to having intercourse. This will be determined by how the area is healing and if there are any post-operative complications. With an uneventful recovery, you should be able to resume intercourse after 4 weeks.

Prior to this time the wounds are too weak and can open up. The friction that develops during intercourse can also break down the healing scars. There is a higher chance of wound healing problems; infections developing; haematomas, if intercourse or heavy exercise is carried out too soon following surgery.

There are several methods of carrying out this surgery. Our surgeons determine the best procedure based on your anatomical concern rather than just doing one method. The genital surgery can involve the clitoral hood, labia minora or majora. Frequently such procedures are carried out in combination and we will help you identify your concerns to the right treatment to effectively deal with this and to leave you with the results you desire to feel confident in your own body. It depends on what your concern is.

The treatment will vary depending on what surgery is required at the time of your consultation. Your patient coordinator will prepare for you a quotation that will include all your pre- and post-surgical care along with the surgery and all other costs will be included within this single fee. Finance options are also available to make your treatment more affordable.

This usually depends on the extent of surgery and your cosmetic surgeon will be able to advise you. Generally speaking between 3 to 6 weeks.

The sutures dissolve by 1 to 3 weeks allowing the scars to heal in a natural way.

Immediately following surgery, the area will be numb for at least 4-5 hours due to local anaesthetic given at the time of your procedure. Following your treatment, you will have some swelling which typically alters the sensation, but this will return once the swelling subsides. With clitoral hood reduction, the clitoral sensation is assessed before the surgery to determine the areas of greatest sensitivity and these areas are avoided to prevent any damage.

While clitoral sensation can become subdued initially following the surgery, this will return to normal as the swelling settles down. Many patients do feel that after all the swelling has settled down that there is greater sensation and stimulation as the clitoris is more accessible following the hood reduction. The labia minora and majora are not as sensitive and the sensory changes here return to normal quicker than with the clitoral hood reductions.

No, once reduced reduced it will remain the same.

With any surgery there can be a degree of swelling and bruising. With a labiaplasty, the swelling can be quite extensive and can last up to a week. This is due to the sensitive tissues in this area of the body. Gravity affects bruises and swelling just like it does everything else, so bruises need combat this to drain back into the abdomen.

If you are having the labia majora / minora and a clitoral hood reduction, then the swelling and discomfort is greater due to more areas being operated on. On average, most patients can expect to be swollen for up to 10 days for most genital surgical procedures. Your results will, very shortly following surgery be evident, but it will be over the proceeding months that you will have a definitive view of your post-surgery results.
