Belly Button Surgery (Umbilicoplasty)
|Addresses||Irregular or no belly button|
Umbilicoplasty, also known as belly button surgery is a cosmetic surgery procedure to change the position, size and shape of your belly button. It’s quite common, after pregnancy or as a result of a hernia around the belly button, that the attachment of the belly button to the deeper tissue is lost. This results in what is commonly known as the ‘outie belly button’. For some, the unsightly appearance of the belly button can be very visible even from under clothing and can cause embarrassment and anxiety. Some umbilical hernias can be serious if not treated by Umbilicoplasty so it’s best to get it checked out.
Belly button surgery is a fairly simple cosmetic treatment that can help reshape your belly button under local anaesthetic. Umbilicoplasty involves making a small cut hidden around the rim of the belly button. The under surface of the belly button can then be repaired to maintain the original shape. Similarly, during a hernia repair it is important to reduce the hernia, repair the defect in the abdominal wall and then refashion the belly button to its original shape.
Belly Button Surgery can provide a simple but permanent solution to improve the appearance of the belly button or repair the hernia if there is one. Most Umbilicoplasty procedures will take about an hour and can be performed in our clinic as a day case.

Is this right for me?
'Outie' belly buttons can be unsightly and cause embarrassment to individuals and sometimes shows through clothing. This can reduce your self-esteem and what you wear in public. In some cases pain and discomfort from a localised hernia be a functional impairment and interfere with activities of daily living. This is a very common problem after pregnancy. A simple local anaesthetic belly button corrective surgery can restore the natural shape of your belly button and end the anxiety and discomfort caused to you on a daily basis.

What the procedure involves
Belly button corrective surgery is carried out by our plastic surgeons, once they have seen and assessed you prior to surgery, a plan is made about your suitability for surgery.
Umbilical correction surgery is carried out as a day case under local anaesthetic where a small incision is made at the rim of the belly button to access and repair it to its original shape. In most cases absorbable sutures are used and simple dressing is applied to the area.
Post-operative care will be given to you on the day of the surgery and you will be reviewed at a week after surgery to check on your recovery.
