Belly Button Surgery (Umbilicoplasty)

Do you have an outie or an innie? Has it stretched following pregnancy? Do you have an underlying hernia? Due to these issues, you might feel self conscious about wearing a bikini or showing your mid-riff off.

Belly button surgery, or umbilicoplasty, is a cosmetic procedure that repairs your belly button, to improve the appearance.

Is this right for me?

Our team of surgeons will personally advise you on how to best achieve your desired appearance. Furthermore, they will show you before and after photos to help with your decision. We will assess your abdomen and discuss the nature of the surgery with you.

You may not be aware you have a hernia. An experienced plastic surgeon can therefore, not only assess the cosmetic appearance, but consequently is able to improve the functional problem caused by the hernia.

What does this involve?

This involves making a small cut hidden around the rim of the belly button. The under surface of the belly button is subsequently repaired. If a hernia is present, we address this at the same time.

The procedure takes about an hour and is performed in our clinic as a day case, under local anaesthetic. The wounds are closed with absorbable stitches and therefore do not require removal after surgery. A simple dressing is placed on the wound. You are subsequently seen by the clinical team, 1 - 2 weeks after surgery to ensure all is healing well.

You can go home the same day. A simple dressing is placed on the wound and is left in place until your review in the clinic. We advise you to minimise any bending and heavy lifting for the first 1- 2 weeks. You can be back at work in 2-3 days. Exercise is held off for 2 weeks and then gradually increased from 2 - 6 weeks.

Due to the location of the wound, we advise to minimise the overall movement in this area as much as possible to allow the scar to heal and to reduce the risk of a stretched scar.

It is very unusual for the problem to re-occur, but during subsequent pregnancy the internal pressure can cause the belly button to revert to an 'outie' again.

Yes. It will involve making a small incision where the previous scar was and repeat the process.

The scar is healed usually by 10 to 14 days. After which you can have a bath or go for a swim.
