The Tell-Tale Signs of Arthritis, Dupuytrens, Carpal Tunnel and Ganglions

Are you having strange sensations or pain in either your hands or feet? As with any condition or illness, there are always signs our bodies use to try and tell us if there is something wrong! So what are the tell-tale signs of some of the common medical conditions our hands and feet may experience?

Arthritis

Arthritis most commonly affects the base of the thumb or the end/middle knuckles of the fingers. Unfortunately there is no proven cure for arthritis, though there are many treatments available to alleviate symptoms such as surgical joint replacement, joint fusion, or even an operation which involves removing the affected bone.

Signs of Arthritis:

• Joint Pain
• Stiffness
• Swelling
• Loss of Function

Dupuytren’s Contracture

Dupuytren’s Contracture/Disease (otherwise known as contracted fingers) affects the hands and the fingers; it occurs when the connective tissue in the palm thickens causing one or more fingers to bend into the palm of the hand. It is not a dangerous condition, although the longer it is left untreated the more difficult it will be to get a good result after surgery – so don’t delay getting a diagnosis!

Signs of Dupuytren’s Contracture:

• Swelling of the injection site or hand
• Bruising
• Bleeding

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

The Carpal Tunnel is a narrow channel at the heel of the hand which is situated between the bones of the wrist, containing several tendons. Pressure can build up on this narrow channel causing swelling on the tendons. The pain can gradually worsen, leading to normal day to day activities being negatively impacted.

Signs of Carpal Tunnel Syndrome:

• Tingling (Fingers or hands)
• Numbness (Fingers or hands)
• Weakness
