3 Things To Be Aware Of Before Breast Augmentation

Did you know Breast Augmentation remains one of the most popular cosmetic surgery procedures in the UK. Here are a three points that you should be aware of before undertaking any breast surgery

1. There are a variety of implant options ranging from silicone to saline implants. What’s the difference?

Silicone Implants

Silicone breast implants are filled with a thick silicone gel which is designed to mimic the texture of normal breast tissue. The silicone is thicker (‘cohesive’) which allows the implants to come in a greater choice of shapes and makes it less likely to leak out of the breast implant.

Saline Water Implants

Saline water filled implants are great for patients who have a slight variation in their breasts because different amounts of saline solution can be injected into each one. They typically last around 10 – 20 years and it is important to understand that further surgery to remove or exchange the implants is likely in the long term. A small proportion of patients may require further surgery at an earlier stage.

2. Breast augmentation, as well as reductions, can possibly affect your ability to breastfeed in the future. Many women who have implants opt not to breastfeed. Although depending on what surgery you have depends on whether you are able to breastfeed!

Areola Incision

There is a small risk there could be damage to minor ducts and could disconnect the main portion of the gland, hindering the ability to breastfeed.

Underarm incisions

Incisions under the arms, or in the crease of the breast, should not cause a problem with breastfeeding, although, this is something that should be discussed at your consultation.

3. Communication with your registered surgeon!

Communication is key! The surgeon you choose must evaluate the shape, surface as well as texture of the breast area. He should also discuss with you the placement of the implants and the incision sites. It is always key to gain some knowledge of your surgeon by checking details about their professional experience as well as their surgical experience! Never go for a surgeon just because they are the cheapest….do your research!
