Anti-Wrinkle Injections, Dermal Fillers And Lip Augmentation – Quick Fixes To Delay The Ageing Process

Our skin is subject to so many elements; genetic makeup, hereditary traits and lifestyle are just some of the factors that will affect how two people of the same age may look different in terms of the appearance of their skin. Some of our habits impact the ageing of the skin to a huge extent, with sun-exposure being one of the most harmful and contributory to premature ageing of the skin. Smoking too has a negative effect, with the production of free-radicals which cause cell damage and lead to premature wrinkles. Pollution can have also an impact, alongside stress, repetitive facial expressions, weight and even sleep position. Indeed, ageing is a gradual process that affects us all to some extent or other, but whilst it can't be stopped, steps can be taken to slow the process down.

The market for anti-ageing products and treatments is huge, and every day we hear of new advances in treatment to help you look and feel years younger. But how do you know which way to turn? Do anti-wrinkle injections and fillers really work? Below we will look at some of your options for cosmetic treatment to help you make an informed decision about how you can go about looking your best self.

Anti-Wrinkle Injections

Injections are made into the specific small facial muscles which cause your wrinkles to show. The injected muscle can no longer contract, which causes the wrinkles to relax and soften as a result. The treatment involves around 5 - 10 injections, each with a tiny quantity of the solution.

Dermal Fillers

Dermal fillers are temporary gel injections lasting for up to a year that can have immediate impact in filling out wrinkles and creases in the skin. A gel ‘filler’ is injected into or under the dermis – the deepest layer of the skin – pushing up or filling the wrinkle or crease and adding subtle volume. There are numerous products currently available, and they often contain hyaluronic acid, a substance found naturally in all body tissues with immediate efficacy in correcting creases.

The gel is formulated with Lidocaine, an anaesthetic, which makes the treatment more comfortable. In addition, local anaesthetic paste is applied 45 minutes prior to treatment and cooling packs may also be administered to help minimise any discomfort and bruising. The area will be briefly massaged after injection, to ensure that the filler is spread evenly. Normal routine can be followed, but strenuous activity should be minimised for 48 hours and any pressure, massaging or interference with the treated area must be avoided for 5 days after treatment. Over a period of 6 – 12 months, the filler will be absorbed naturally into the body, though in some cases more frequent top ups may be required.

Lip Fillers and Augmentation

Full lips are often associated with youth and sensuality, but lines and wrinkles around the lips may appear with age. Lip enhancement or augmentation adds volume to the lip either by lip implants such as PermaLip™ or via the injection of a lip filler, similar to the dermal fillers previously mentioned.

The lips are left with a fuller shape and a reduction in creases, improving the smile and boosting the confidence. The enhancement of a cupid's bow can be achieved by adding volume and shape to the lip, or in some cases both lips can be enlarged to create a better balance between the lips and the rest of the facial features. With lip fillers offering a fantastic temporary solution, perfect for a special occasion and lasting for around 4 – 6 months depending on the individual, lip augmentation has a longer lasting effect and will not deflate, degrade or rupture over time, with no limitation to lip movement and a natural appearance.

Lip filler is formulated with hyaluronic acid and is injected to add volume to the lip, to enhance the border and improve a cupid’s bow. The injection goes directly under the skin and more can be added to achieve the desired effect; the swelling will generally last a day.

PermaLip™ lip implants can be carried out on upper or lower lips and are performed under local anaesthetic, with the lip numbed with a dental injection for your comfort. Once anaesthetised, two small incisions are made just inside the corners of the mouth so as not to be visible. A small tunnel is made under the skin of the lip and the soft silicone PermaLip™ implant is passed through. Once in place, the incisions inside the mouth are closed with absorbable sutures (stitches).

The procedure takes approximately 20 - 30 minutes. The tiny incisions heal quickly and are invisible from the outside of your mouth. The swelling may last for a few days however, it quickly subsides to leave a fuller looking lip that doesn't require topping up. A follow-up is carried out after one week to check the results and healing.
