10 Cosmetic Surgery Myths Busted

Myth #2 – You won’t be able to breastfeed after having breast implants.

Before / After comparison of Breast Augmentation

This myth comes from a misunderstanding of breast implants. Depending on how the implant is placed inside of the breast it should not interfere with a women’s milk-producing cells. If you are having breast implants prior to having children, please discuss your desire to still be able to breast feed with your surgeon. We would not recommend that any women consider having breast implant surgery until at least 3 months after they have stopped breast feeding and the milk has dried up.

Myth #3 – You need to be rich to be able to afford cosmetic surgery.

When cosmetic surgery was first practiced openly in the 1920s it was only affordable to the elite upper classes. With the advancement in procedures and more surgeons willing to perform them it has become more accessible to the masses.

Since the first successful silicone breast implant surgery in the 1960s the procedure has gained an increase in popularity every decade. The cosmetic surgery industry has seen a boom in the last 20 years and with 0% finance options available meaning you can pay your surgery off on a monthly basis the now average wage of a person opting for cosmetic surgery is around
£26k.

Myth #4 – Liposuction helps you lose weight without diet and exercise.

Unfortunately, Liposuction can not be used as a substitute for a healthy lifestyle with a balanced diet and regular exercise. Weight gain and loss is much more complex than just removing fat cells from the body.

The body has a set equilibrium amount of fat, based on diet, mood, hormones, and exercise. If you remove fat without changing the equilibrium, the body will just increase the size of fat cells somewhere else, sometimes in dangerous places.

Fat does not return if it is removed by liposuction, but if you do not maintain a regular diet – the remaining fat cells will increase in size.

Myth #5 – If you have Rhinoplasty (nose job) your nose will have to be broken.

When having nose surgery, it may not be necessary for the surgeon to break your nasal bones. Procedures such as a Septoplasty to improve the size of your airway and improve your breathing may not require the bones to be broken, alternatively it may be possible for the surgeon to ‘shave’ the bones without resorting to breaking them.

Each individual’s needs are different and will be discussed fully with
your surgeon at your consultation.

Myth #6 – It will be obvious to people if you have cosmetic surgery.

If you have a surgical procedure that alters your appearance dramatically, then it will be quite obvious to those close to you, surgery that is used to enhance features that are ageing such as the Concept™ Facelift or an eyelift with expert
precision, will leave you looking ‘refreshed’ as opposed to ‘altered’
and you will find yourself getting more compliments as to how ‘well’
you’re looking as opposed to questions like ‘what have you done?’.

An expert cosmetic surgeon will ensure your scars as minimal as possible and encourage you to enhance your natural beauty as opposed to altering it completely.

Myth #7 – People who have cosmetic surgery are doing it for vanity and are obsessed with their looks

People can be greatly affected in their everyday life when they are unhappy with their appearance. Their confidence can be impacted, making day to day life very unhappy. Often, people seek cosmetic enhancement because their body has changed in some way.

Women especially, see many changes happen to their bodies that are out of their control due to childbirth and ageing. For others, it may be that they were born with an issue that they’re unhappy with and have maybe suffered from ridicule because of it.

Our surgeons see first hand the difference having a cosmetic procedure to enhance your looks can have on someone’s overall confidence and happiness.

Myth #8 – People have cosmetic surgery to look like their favourite celebrity.

Needle anti-wrinkle injection solution

This is not strictly true. Most people when opting for cosmetic surgery do so hoping to enhance their natural features. They want to look like a younger or improved version of themselves.

There are however individuals that do wish to recreate themselves to look like their favourite celebrity, but these individuals are rare. On occasion a patient may bring an image of a public figure to emphasise to the surgeon what their goal is they would like to achieve. For instance,
there has been an increase in women requesting for a nose that resembles Princess Kate’s.

Although everyone’s anatomy is different and it is not always possible to recreate someone else’s body features, it can be helpful to the surgeon to see in advance what you hope to achieve from your final surgical outcome.

Myth #9 – You won’t be able to move your face if you have Anti-Wrinkle Injections.

Anti wrinkle injections are typically used to prevent certain muscles from fully contracting and preventing wrinkles from forming on the facial area by freezing that particular area. An expert practitioner will be able to recognise where the treatment is most needed on the face and inject those areas only allowing for movement elsewhere.

When done correctly anti wrinkle injections can be discreet and no one would be able to tell that you have had them. Although, some people like to opt for what is referred to as the ‘frozen’ look.

Myth #10 – Breast implants can explode.

Breast implants can’t actually ‘explode’, but the myth came about due to saline implants (implants filled with a saline solution) suddenly losing volume due to rupturing and the saline solution leaking and being absorbed by the body leaving the patient with an almost completely flat breast area.

Silicone implants if ruptured can leak, but are considered to be much tougher than saline implants and do not ‘explode’ or ‘deflate’.

If you are concerned that your implants are no longer intact, you can discuss this with your cosmetic surgeon or general practitioner who may refer you to get them scanned.
